Wispr Flow review: the AI voice-to-text tool every web designer needs

by

Here’s a stat nobody warned me about when I became a web designer: this job is basically typing all day. Client emails. Briefs. Proposals. Website copy. DMs. Long, detailed prompts to AI. It never stops.

I’m an Australian web designer and online educator who teaches graphic designers how to build WordPress websites without the overwhelm. For years I just accepted that getting words out of my head and onto a screen was going to eat half my day.

Then I found Wispr Flow — an AI voice-to-text dictation app that lets me talk instead of type. Client emails, website copy, briefs, DMs, even long back-and-forths with AI tools — anything I’d normally type, I now speak. And it comes out clean: properly punctuated, filler words removed, tone adjusted to the app I’m in.

I’ve used it every single day for two months. I genuinely get my words out about four times faster than I used to. If you’re a designer who spends most of your day at your keyboard, this one’s worth knowing about.

What is Wispr Flow and how does it work?

Wispr Flow is a voice-to-text dictation app for Mac and iPhone. You speak, it types — but not in the clunky, punctuation-free way you might be picturing.

It works across basically every app on your computer. Gmail, Notion, Google Docs, your website builder, Slack, client portals. Anywhere you’d normally type, you can speak instead.

You hit a keyboard shortcut, you talk, and it types. It removes filler words like “um” and “uh”, adds punctuation automatically, and even adjusts the tone depending on context. So a quick Slack message comes out casual, and a client email comes out professional. You don’t have to think about it — it just figures it out.

The first time I used it to write an email and it came out almost perfectly: right tone, right punctuation, no robotic phrasing. I was genuinely impressed. And it’s been like that every day since.

How I actually use it in my web design business

Here’s where it gets practical. These are the things I personally use Wispr Flow for every day:

Client emails — This is the big one. Instead of sitting down to write a considered email, I just talk through what I want to say. It’s so much faster, and the emails still sound like me.

Responding to enquiries — New leads need a fast, professional response. I can talk through a reply in a fraction of the time it would take to type it.

Content drafts — I’ll talk through a rough idea and then clean it up in editing. Way faster than starting from a blank page.

Quick client updates — Keeping clients in the loop mid-project doesn’t have to take long. I just talk, it types, I hit send.

Anything where I need to get thoughts out fast — Sometimes you just need to brain-dump. Speaking is so much quicker than typing, and Wispr Flow keeps up.

Can you really use voice-to-text for professional design work?

This is the question I would have asked before trying it. And honestly — yes, you absolutely can.

The thing that makes Wispr Flow different from just using your phone’s built-in dictation is the AI cleanup. It doesn’t just transcribe what you say word for word. It listens, interprets, and outputs something that sounds like you actually sat down and wrote it.

I don’t have to speak in perfect sentences. I don’t have to remember to say “full stop” or “comma.” I just talk the way I normally talk, and it handles the rest.

What I don’t love about it

Due to Apple permissions, it won’t work in every app on my older iPhone (it’s honestly making me think about upgrading my phone).

My verdict as a web designer:

4.9/5 — so close to perfect. The only reason it’s not a full five stars is app compatibility on my older iPhones. On desktop, it’s flawless. Highly, highly recommend.

At a glance

Fave feature: Cleans up speech in real time. Removes filler words like ums, ahs, and even drops words when it knows I’ve made mistakes.

Replaces: Typing, or using the built-in voice-to-text on your phone or computer — both of which feel so clunky now in comparison.

How often I use it: Daily, without exception, for 2 months now and counting.
